Two freshmen series will wrap up their US runs this week, both with question marks lingering over their futures.

This is a shame: Grandfathered and The Grinder, both on Fox, have proven to be surprisingly nimble, surprisingly meta and, in the latter case, at least, surprisingly, and almost subversively, innovative.

Both share some things in common. Stamos turns Full House’s Jesse “Have Mercy” Katsopolis into an unexpected grandfather and Lowe, well, he’s not exactly playing The West Wing’s Sam Seaborn, but he’s definitely spoofing what a lesser actor might have become after the role ended.
